Canterbury Rugby is proud to announce Alex Robertson as the Head Coach of the Canterbury NPC side for the 2026 season.
Canterbury Rugby was pleased with the strong level of interest in the role, with a high-quality field of both internal and external applicants.
Robertson’s appointment reflects Canterbury Rugby’s strong commitment to developing and promoting people through clear and meaningful pathways, both on and off the field. His own coaching journey is a strong example of that pathway in action, having begun his coaching career in Ellesmere in 2017 before progressing through roles with Lincoln University,Canterbury Country, Canterbury B’s, Canterbury Under 19s and the CrusadersUnder 20s. Along the way, he has contributed to multiple teams lifting trophies, underlining his impact in high-performance environments.
Since joining the Canterbury NPC coaching group in 2022,Robertson has been a key part of the programme, with the team reaching the finals series each season and lifting the trophy in 2025. In his current roles as Canterbury NPC Assistant Coach and New Zealand Under 20s Head Coach, he has been instrumental in building depth and developing the next wave of rugby talent in our region.
Beyond the field, Robertson has built a professional career as an IT and Business Project Manager, leading teams in demanding, results-driven environments and developing strong leadership, communication and planning skills. This blend of corporate leadership and high-performance sport has shaped his people-first, performance-led approach as a coach and mentor.
Canterbury Rugby CEO Tony Smail said the appointment speaks to the strength of the organisation’s internal development model.
“Alex is a fantastic example of the pathways we’re proud to create at Canterbury Rugby. He’s worked his way through the coaching system, consistently added value at every level, and played a significant role in the success of our NPC programme. We’re excited to see him step into this role and lead our championship winning side,” he said.
Robertson said he was honoured to be given the opportunity.
“I’m incredibly proud and grateful to be given the opportunity to lead the Canterbury NPC side. Coming off such a special season in 2025 being able to pick up the reins is hugely exciting. I’m really looking forward to working with this group, on and off the field, to continue that momentum and see what we can build together”.
